"... most members join our clubs to improve their confidence and ability to speak in front of a group. But they remain in Toastmasters because of the outstanding leadership opportunities and the many unexpected benefits they gain: a powerful support system, friendship/camaraderie, self-fulfilment and the ability to help others."

Speechcraft course a hit!

Deloitte

Duncan Croft

The Christchurch office recently ran a successful Speechcraft course, with feedback from participants being overwhelmingly positive.

The Speechcraft programme is facilitated by the internationally renowned Toastmasters organisation, and can be run in any office.

Participants learn how to gain confidence in public speaking, develop their communication and language skills, how to think quickly and clearly, become an effective listener, and how to use body language and visual aids.

Growth Solutions Consultant Aaron Cassidy says that he had considered doing the course in the past, but “it wasn’t until I was approached by a manager that described how relevant the course is to every day life and to PAS, PCE2 that I will be sitting next year that I decided to enrol and never looked back.”

Aaron says that the course was very beneficial. “Every night people on the course seemed to walk away from Speechcraft with a buzz, and the following couple of days round the office you would also hear the topical conversation about past weeks speeches.”

“I also like the method of delivery of the course. At any time you never felt you were there alone. With the Toastmasters philosophy everyone is evaluated, commended and recommended new ideas for future speeches.”

Growth Solutions Senior Analyst Sean Buttle also feels the Speechcraft course was a valuable experience which taught him a lot.

“The Speechcraft course taught me how to utilise body language and visual aids to give an effective presentation.”

“The impromptu speaking sessions encouraged me to think quickly and remain calm. Both of these skills will be very useful when faced with unexpected and challenging situations.”

Both Aaron and Sean say that they would highly recommend the Speechcraft course to others.

“Speechcraft is a fantastic course that people shouldn’t hesitate to dive in to” says Aaron. “It gave me the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone, within a group that you feel comfortable within.”

“The Toastmasters provided valuable feedback at each session helping you to continually develop your public speaking skills” adds Sean. “It was also interesting hearing the variety of topics presented each week by all of the participants.”
